The great and mighty Roger Keth "Syd" Barrett died on Friday, July 7th, of complications related to diabetes. The founding member of Pink Floyd was 60 and he WILL BE MISSED.
He had not recorded one note of music in decades but his work with early Floyd and his solo work (AND his many paintings) have made clear his mark on art and artists alike.
I am not venting as usual here because of the great respect I have for the man. Here's to you, you crazy fucker.

USA SUCKS AT SOCCER!!!

Ok, so.... I've been away for awhile watching the World Cup of Soccer (Football) (You know, where all of the players actually make CONTACT with the BALL with their FEET!) And it turns out that the 5th highest ranked National team on the planet sucks BALLS. The United States of America, a country with a waning (at best) interest in the sport, has such BEAUTIFUL prospects going into this Cup, ranking higher than many other (better) teams like Argentina, and yet they lose to the Czech Republic in their opening game AND go on to blow an amazing long-shot chance to get into the round of 16 by beating Ghana to LOSING TO GHANA.

OK, Ghana is a TINY west African nation about the size of a potato ("they recently had the whole place carpeted"). The capital is Accra and their chief export is dust and famine. Oh, and gold. In fact, they had to divert power from ALL of their gold mines (THE ONLY THING HAPPENING IN GHANA) to cities so that the people could watch the games. CRAZY. The irony here is that the US, a HUGE country and arguably THE SUPERPOWER on the planet can't put a decent soccer team together. This IS the same country that finished 3rd in the very 1st World Cup in 1930? Hell, I watched a damn good team lose to Germany at 6:30am CST in 2002. It's nuts.

And when the US was playing Ghana for their long shot at making it through to the round of 16 you could have asked 95% of Americans if their country was playing and I GUARANTEE they would have had NO IDEA. (In Brazil they changed the LAW so that banks could close during their games.)

So... Why is this? Why do US citizens (on the whole) care so little for such a GLOBAL SPORT? Here's my naive opinion: The US was FASCINATED by soccer, just as any Euro-brake-off nation would be (current immigrants LOVE the game), and their finish in that 1930 Cup proves their determination and drive. But then other sports started to develop... AMERICAN SPORTS.
Sports like Basketball and Baseball and (American) Football. These are all fine sports with FAR too many commercial interruptions but were considered NEW and definitely AMERICAN GODDAMMIT!!! And this country is Nothing if not a Bucker of Tradition, so we said "FUCK IT, this sport is OLD SCHOOL and we are very much NEW SCHOOL. And we excel at all of OUR sports (unless Argentina beats our basketball team in the Olympics). So we dropped out of the Global excitement surrounding Soccer around the same time we dropped out of the Globe. (Hell, it took Pearl Harbour to get the US involved in WWII!)

I'm sickened. How about a little interest from the general public? How about US getting our collective head out of our ass long enough to see that there's a big 'ol world out there waiting for US to participate in it? It's Hard to make friends if you build walls. This may sound like I'm overstating but I DO firmly believe that we have shut ourselves off from the world at large (much as Rome did in its final years) and soccer is only ONE EXAMPLE.

OH YEAH.... AND THE US SUCKS AT SOCCER.

p.s. Some interesting facts:

1) The commentators (aside from Marcelo Balboa) on ESPN and ABC are HORRIBLE with a lack of excitement for the game that I've only ever seen before in a TOASTER.

2) ABC's coverage is HORRIBLE, they didn't show the 1st or 3rd US game because it would have coincided with their weekday crap line-up (depriving any potential non-cable-having fans
from even watching the games).

3) ABC started coverage of MOST of the games they DID show 1min to 30sec before kickoff.

4) My LOCAL ABC affiliate in Alabama preempted the first Sunday match one weekend to show a local church broadcast (go figure). The World Cup happens once every 4 YEARS!!!

5) Argentina WILL beat Germany, at home, 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

National Day of Prayer Makes Clear Church/State Division

The U.S. government and the nation as a whole is celebrating THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER today, May 4th. Well, it's good to see the federal government is making the divisions of church and State so perfectly clear. So much for making "no law respecting an establishment of religion."

Now, to be fair, the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving has been around for over two centuries, but why does the government have to get involved? Why can't citizens have true freedom of religion and not be told by the government what to think or believe? But when the President tells the American people, "Prayer is a gift from Almighty God," that seems slightly biased toward Christianity. And to further illustrate the Administration's bias (and anti-evolutionary views) Bush went on, "Prayer strengthens us by reminding us that God loves and cares for each and every soul in His creation." Good to know.

So... today the White House tells America, "Almighty God created you and if you pray he will strengthen you." HOW THE HELL IS THAT A SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE? I'm sickened.

I happen to not be Christian (could ya tell?) but I do greatly respect Christianity as a personal faith. But, you know what I also respect...? ALL PERSONAL FAITHS. Hinduism, Islam, Wicca, Vaudau, Buddhism, Atheism, you name it. And, hey, you know what? Not all of those personal faiths acknowledge the existence of an "Almighty God." So it seems irresponsible for the Bush administration to get all Bible-thumpy, especially when it abandoned one of the most basic tenets of the Bible, "Turn the other cheek." This became clear when they responded to 9/11 with all-out warfare on an unbeatable enemy.

But that rant will have to wait for another day. Now I have to go pray.

BUSH BUYS CHINESE PRESIDENT LUNCH!!!

So, apparently OUR PRESIDENT, THE ALMIGHTY INCORRUPTIBLE BUSH, had the Chinese President, HU JINTAO, over for lunch last week. He was given a 21-gun salute and they ate lunch and yada yada yada. But wait. This was supposed to be a State meeting. A Golden opportunity for Bush to question the Chinese head-of-State about all sorts of pressing Sino-American issues (the trade differencial, to spot one elephant). But did our wise leader rise to that challenge? HELL NO HE DIDN'T! The president of China, whose country's companies employ more US citizens than American companies, is sitting in front of him and he discussed NO REAL ISSUES WHATSOEVER. Sure, he mentioned Iran's struggle to attain WMDs, North Korea and all THAT craziness... and something might have been thrown in about China's history of human rights violations, but it was all very camera friendly, very photo-op, very... POLITICAL.

Now, my mother taught me a long time ago about the importance of keeping up appearances (look nice for church, smile when spoken to, wear leather to dom, say "Yes, Sir" and "Yes, Ma'am"), but for the 2 leaders of the LARGEST, MOST MILITARISTIC countries to sit down and have lunch and not REALLY ADDRESS the most serious issues between them is SILLY, at best. At worst it's DANGEROUS TO THE STABILITY OF THE WORLD. But what does Bush care? He's only got a little over 2 years left in office. Have a little lunch, smile for the camera and try not to mispronounce any words in the speech they wrote for you.

Oh, yeah. So Bush buys Hu lunch. China is estimated to have a trade surplus of over $140 BILLION dollars this year. The bulk of that comes from US. Meanwhile, our economy sucks, gas prices keep going up, kids are dying in the Middle East, and they took Arrested Development off the air. But, go ahead, Georgie, stuff your ignorant face and stick to the script. It's worked so far...

Florida Teen Beaten to Death at Juvee BootCamp

So... all of Florida's JUVENILE BOOTCAMPS closed today after a 14 year-old boy was kicked and beaten to death by the attending guards at the facility he was being held in. This all happened in PANAMA CITY and it held a good 10 second spot in most local newscasts. The Florida judicial branch stated that they may need to look into a "less militaristic way" to deal with problem children than juvenile bootcamps. Uh,... Ya think?

For years now we've been sending our particularly pain-in the-assy kids off to one place or another (summer camp, boarding schools, a relative's house, bootcamp, the closet, etc.), but for "juvenile offenders," the love seems even tougher. Thanks, I'm sure, in part, to Maury and Jerry and whoever the hell else is still broadcasting BS on the TV, parents now seem to think that if your kid gets in trouble you can just ship him or her off to one of these BS bootcamps for a quick-fix.

So, a couple of dumbass guards with no better way to make a living beat a 14 year-old boy to death in Florida? Wooptee Shiz! says the COUNTRY. It's not like there's a test you have to take in order to breed. It's not like there's safe, monogamous sex being taught in schools. If anything, we are telling future parents, "Hey, you dropped out of high-school because you got pregnant and then got married? Go ahead, have 10 kids, what the hell. And we'll not only understand, we'll PAY YOU FOR IT!!!"

The welfare state in THIS COUNTRY (USA) allows otherwise able-bodied individuals to do nothing more than to sit (or lay) on their asses and BREED, BREED, BREED. And, like I said earlier, there's no test they make you take for that. AND... they pay you. And you may be asking yourself what any of this has to do with the 14 year-old in P.C. Well then, here it is:

He was beaten to death because he was in a screwed-up facility in a screwed up state. He was there because he was an angry, maladjusted kid who had acted out against his parents, or his classmates, or society, or any number of things. And he probably, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!!, acted out against the authority figures at this crap juvee bootcamp for the same reason he did anything else: HE WAS AN ANGRY, MALADJUSTED KID.

And, due to many states policies, adolescent offenders are often forced to go to one of these bootcamps in lieu of jail or fines and these kids and their low-income, low-influence, low-IQ families have no alternative but to accept these deals.

SO... here's the REAL deal: Better teach young children about their sexuality and appropriate methods of contraception and selective choice of monogamous sexual partners, don't reward stupidity and inactivity and uncontrolled breeding with government pay-outs and DON'T SEND YOUR PAIN-IN-THE-ASS KIDS TO A BOOTCAMP once they freak out and do something stupid on account of your terrible parenting. Ya know?

Anyway, I think I've vented my rage enough for one day. I'll be back tomorrow. I'm sure something stupid will happen then.

Bush Administration Announces No Medical Benefits To Marijuana

So, after years of sticking to the same old BS, this monkey administration has finally made it official: THERE ARE NO MEDICINAL BENEFITS TO MARIJUANA SMOKING. Releasing an official Admin. Statement, the White House has declared that there is NO scientifically acredited proof that there are any medical benefits to the consumption of Marijuana.... WHATSOEVER.

Being a person who has seen the beneficial effects of marijuana on a terminal brain cancer patient first hand, that seems a little hard to swallow. To be fair, though, it's hard to believe ANYTHING that comes out of the White House these days. The VAST majority of the scientific community immediately reacted to this Statement with disgust. The "lack of any credible evidence" the Admin. was referring to were in fact tens of thousands of pages of research from the nation's top scientists. So, the White House not only told 300million Americans that marijuana cannot and does not help with ANY medical problem (BS!!!!!) but they also told a great number of doctors, scientists and researchers that THEY were full of BS. I'm sickened.

As an AMERICAN, I learned a long time ago not to expect much honesty out of ANY politician, HOWEVER, for an entire administration to ignore undisputible science seems not only dangerously dismissive but BLATENTLY IRRESPONSIBLE.
